Vernac Books exists because eleven official languages should mean eleven catalogues of children’s literature, not one. Every child learning to read in South Africa should be able to do it in the language they think in, with characters who look like them, in places they recognise, told with the cultural soul of where they come from.
What Vernac Books stands for
Mother-tongue firstChildren learn to read fastest in the language they already speak. Vernac Books publishes single-language readers in every official South African language — not as translations of an English original, but as primary editions in their own right.
Cultural soul, not literal translationEvery reader is transcreated, not translated. Local proverbs replace English idioms. First-person possessives replace complex spatial phrases. The book sounds the way a grandparent would tell the story.
Built for how children actually learnEvery reader carries CAPS-aligned Foundation Phase structure: sight words, phonics focus, pre-reading prompt, post-comprehension questions. Pedagogy on the page, not in a separate workbook.
Boy and girl protagonists, balanced by designThe Grade 1 catalogue runs sixteen boy-protagonist titles and sixteen girl-protagonist titles. The series ages with the readers from Grade 1 to Grade 7.
A child who can read in their own language never has to translate themselves.
Why now
South African Foundation Phase reading outcomes are among the lowest measured globally. The structural reason is mother-tongue access. Vernac Books is the infrastructure to change that, language by language, school by school.
