Why Mother Tongue First

The research is settled. The practice is not.

Children who learn to read first in their home language reach the same English literacy outcomes by Grade 4 — but with deeper comprehension, stronger identity and greater academic resilience throughout school.

Cognitive transfer.

Children read more, comprehend deeper and carry skills into the second language. UNESCO identifies mother-tongue instruction as the single largest predictor of long-term reading outcomes.

Identity and engagement.

Seeing your own language on the page changes a child's relationship to school. Engagement, attendance and self-concept all measurably improve.

The South African gap.

SA publishes a small fraction of the children's titles its demographics warrant. The result: foundation phase classrooms with no books in the language children speak at home.
