Books for the children of every South African language.

Vernac Books publishes CAPS-aligned children's literature in South Africa's eleven official mother tongues. We start where the work matters most — in the first words a child reads, in the language they hear at home.

What Vernac Books Stands For

A reading catalogue built for South African classrooms, homes and hearts.

Three principles shape every title we publish. They are not aspirational. They are how we work.

01

Mother tongue first.

Children read more, comprehend deeper and carry their identity further when they first meet the page in the language they hear at home. Every Vernac Books title is written, illustrated and edited for that moment.

02

Built for guardians and teachers.

Every reader includes sight-word lists, phonics focus notes and classroom discussion prompts. A guardian who doesn't speak the mother tongue can still read alongside their child. A teacher gets a CAPS-aligned First Additional Language tool out of the box.

03

Eleven languages, by design.

We resist publishing thin coverage. We went deep in each language — every Grade 1 title in every single official tongue. All eleven are live today. Grade 2 begins next.

In the Catalogue

352 readers. Eleven mother tongues. One catalogue.

Starting at Grade 1 and scaling through the foundation phase. Each title is built for early literacy — universal childhood themes, structured phonics and original illustration. Boy and girl protagonists across the series, balanced by design.

Bilingual Editions · R90

Mother tongue and English. Same page. Same illustration.

Our bilingual editions pair every line of mother-tongue text with its English equivalent, sharing one illustration. A guardian who doesn't yet speak the language can still read alongside their child — and the child learns both at once.

Designed for pre-schools and early primary classrooms where the home language and the language of instruction are not the same. Available as a variant of every Grade 1 reader.

Institutional Partnerships

Mother-tongue reading, in the classroom.

Vernac Books works with pre-schools, primary schools and educational groups to bring mother-tongue and bilingual reading into structured early learning. We support institutional partners across South Africa.

What an institutional partnership looks like.

  • Curated reading sets per classroom, aligned to your term plan and language profile.
  • Teacher orientation on phonics progression, sight-word use and First Additional Language integration.
  • Bilingual editions for classrooms where the home language and the language of instruction are not the same.
  • Volume pricing for sets of 15 or more, with replenishment cycles built around the school year.
  • Pilot programmes available on application, suited to institutions integrating mother-tongue reading for the first time.

The Vernac Books Vision

We publish so that no South African child grows up without seeing themselves on the page.

Mother-tongue literacy is the substrate of identity, the architecture of belonging and the single largest determinant of long-term reading comprehension in any second language a child will later learn. South Africa publishes a small fraction of the children's titles its language demographics warrant. Vernac Books is the response to that gap — methodical, at scale and in the languages that built this country.
